Why Early Puppy Training Matters
The early weeks and months of a puppy’s life represent a critical developmental window. Habits and associations formed during this period tend to persist into adulthood. All Dogs Unleashed works with Des Moines puppy owners to take full advantage of this window through structured, positive training experiences that build confidence and reliability.
1
Socialization Foundations
Puppies exposed to diverse people, environments, sounds, and animals during their first few months develop into more adaptable adult dogs. Our socialization protocols guide owners through deliberate, positive exposure experiences that reduce fear responses and prepare puppies for the real world.
2
Bite Inhibition Training
Mouthing and nipping are natural puppy behaviors, but they require early correction to prevent escalation. Our trainers teach puppies appropriate play boundaries and redirect biting impulses through consistent reinforcement techniques that are safe for the whole family.
3
Crate and Potty Training
Establishing reliable house training habits from day one prevents many of the most common household frustrations. We provide guidance on crate acclimation, scheduled potty routines, and consistent reinforcement strategies that make the housetraining process faster and less stressful.
Core Obedience Skills for Puppies
Young dogs have tremendous capacity for learning when training is kept positive, brief, and consistent. All Dogs Unleashed structures puppy training around foundational commands that become the building blocks for advanced work as the dog matures.
Sit, Stay, and Down
Reliable sit, stay, and down responses give owners immediate control in everyday situations, from greeting visitors to preventing door dashing. We teach these commands using reward-based methods that make learning enjoyable for puppies and sustainable for owners.
Recall Training
A strong recall response can prevent dangerous situations and is one of the most valuable skills any dog can have. Our trainers build solid come-when-called responses through high-value reinforcement, gradually increasing distance and distraction levels as the puppy advances.
Leash Manners
Puppies that learn to walk politely on leash from an early age are far easier to manage throughout their lives. We introduce leash pressure, loose-leash walking techniques, and attention-based exercises that help puppies develop comfortable, cooperative walking habits.
Addressing Common Puppy Behavior Challenges
Every puppy comes with its own personality and set of challenges. Our Des Moines puppy trainers assess each dog individually and tailor their approach to address the specific behaviors that concern their owners most.
Jumping and Excitability
Enthusiastic greetings are endearing in small puppies but quickly become problematic as dogs grow. We teach puppies to offer calm, four-paw greetings and reward controlled behavior so that jumping becomes unnecessary and less reinforcing.
Destructive Chewing
Chewing is a normal puppy outlet, but misdirected chewing causes damage and frustration. Our trainers show owners how to provide appropriate chew outlets, manage the environment during high-risk periods, and redirect chewing impulses away from furniture and personal items.
Separation Anxiety Prevention
Dogs that struggle with being alone often develop anxiety when the foundation for independence was never properly established. We incorporate early independence training exercises that help puppies feel comfortable spending time alone and reduce the likelihood of separation-related issues later in life.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from Des Moines-area dog owners about our in-home dog training and private lessons.
Puppies can begin our Board and Train program between 14-16 weeks of age, once they are fully vaccinated (16 weeks is preferred, though we can occasionally make exceptions). For younger puppies, we offer a puppy consultation to help set you up for success from day one. This includes guidance on structure, routines, and early behaviors so you’re building a solid foundation until your puppy is ready for formal training.
Starting early with the right approach helps prevent common issues and makes the transition into formal training much smoother.
Session length varies based on the puppy’s age, attention span, and curriculum level. Younger puppies typically benefit from shorter, more frequent sessions. Our trainers adjust the format based on individual learning pace and owner availability.
Owner involvement is a core component of every program. You will learn the commands, timing, and reinforcement techniques your puppy responds to so that training continues effectively at home between sessions.
We use a balanced training approach that combines positive reinforcement with clear structure, accountability, and consistent communication. Our goal is to help dogs understand what is expected of them while building reliable, real-world obedience. This approach allows us to address both basic obedience and more serious behavioral issues in a way that is clear, fair, and effective for the dog. We also focus heavily on educating owners so they can confidently maintain and build on their dog’s training at home.
Yes, we have experience working with dogs displaying aggressive behaviors and we’re here to help. For dogs with a known bite history or more serious behavioral concerns, we do require an evaluation before acceptance into our Board and Train program. This allows us to assess whether the dog is a good fit for a structured facility environment and ensures the safety of our staff and other dogs.
If a dog is not a suitable candidate for Board and Train, we can discuss alternative options such as in-home training. Our goal is always to find the best and safest path forward for both the dog and the owner.
Initial consultations include behavioral assessment, skill evaluation, and discussion of your specific goals. Our Des Moines trainers recommend program enrollment based on this comprehensive evaluation rather than assumptions about breed or age.
