You have your eye on a franchise, but you’re not sure if you’re the right person for the job. You’ve never owned your own business before and there’s no direct industry experience on your resume. Is your pure determination enough? Read on to learn what franchises look for in franchisees.

Entrepreneurial Spirit

First and foremost, you need to have the mindset of an entrepreneur. That means you seek out opportunities to change and grow, rather than waiting for things to happen to you. You’re not afraid of risk because you know that all success comes with risk. You learn from your mistakes and don’t lose your sense of optimism in the face of setbacks. With this attitude, you’re more equipped to take an existing business model and make it thrive in your community.

Related Skills

Let’s say you want to open an All Dogs Unleashed franchise, but you’ve never worked with dogs in a professional capacity. Do you have experience in customer service? Have you managed a team of employees before? Have you taken your own dogs to a different training school and noticed what worked and what didn’t? Rather than focusing on the related experience you don’t have, evaluate the related skills you do have.

Commitment

Where do you see yourself in five years? If the answer is, “Living in a whole new place and starting a brand-new job,” now might not be the time to pursue business ownership. If, however, you’re committed to growing a business over the course of several years, you’re well-positioned to open your own branch of a franchise. Even with an existing business model, success takes time and dedication.

Leadership

Are you comfortable taking charge, making plans, and delegating goal-oriented tasks? Do you pride yourself on strong communication skills? Can you take responsibility for mistakes as easily as you can take responsibility for successes? Opening a franchise means owning and operating a business, putting together a team, and offering reliable team management. If you’ve honed your leadership skills and have the track record to back them up, you may be ready to step into the role of franchisee.

Financial Stability

Naturally, you’re already thinking about the money-making possibilities of opening a franchise. However, you’ll need a way to finance the startup costs, including any franchise fees, commercial property expenses, and employee wages. It could be several months (if not longer) before you start turning a consistent profit. Franchises are looking for franchisees with enough financial stability to survive the early stages.

Market Access

Finally, how well can you assess the demand for your franchise? Is there a market waiting to be served in your city? Franchises typically collect royalties, and they’re looking for franchisees who will open profitable locations. The higher the demand and the lower the competition, the better.

At All Dogs Unleashed, we treat our franchisees like part of the ADU family. Learn more about our low startup and royalty fees and the unwavering support we’ll provide along the way.
